Trip overview
At 8:30 AM, meet your guide at our garage at 352 Ngoc Thuy Street, Long Bien, and depart from Hanoi towards Ba Be National Park (approximately 240 km / 5 hours), often nicknamed “Halong Bay in the mountains.”
We take scenic countryside roads via Dai Lai Lake and Dinh Hoa (ATK), the historic safe zone of the Viet Minh since 1946, in order to avoid the busy traffic of National Road 3. Along the way, ride through beautiful villages surrounded by tea plantations and acacia forests.
After lunch at a local restaurant, continue along the mountain roads to Ba Be. On the way, we take time to visit the impressive Hua Ma Cave, a huge karst mountain cave hidden in the forest.
In the late afternoon, ride to Coc Toc village, where you will stay with our friend’s family from the Tay ethnic group. Private room included.
After breakfast, you may choose to load the motorbikes onto a private boat to cross Ba Be Lake while admiring the landscapes of the largest natural lake in Vietnam, surrounded by limestone forests. The boat cruise continues along the Nang River and passes through the impressive Puong Cave before reaching a dock where we continue the ride (optional boat transfer: 35 USD). You may also choose to take the road instead.
Today’s ride takes us through the midland regions inhabited by Tay, Dao, and H’mong ethnic communities. Along the way, we stop to visit local families and enjoy beautiful photo opportunities.
Arrival in Lam Thuong, Luc Yen, a peaceful land of lush green fields and gentle countryside scenery. Take time to ride around the valley and meet our friends in the village. Dinner features tasty organic food grown by local families.
Overnight at our friends’ homestay with private room included.
After breakfast, we say goodbye to the host family around 8:15 AM and begin our ride along a historic route once used during the border conflict with China. We then cross the majestic Hoang Lien Son mountain range, the highest mountain range in Vietnam, entering part of the remote Lai Chau Province region.
The ride continues through the beautiful rice-field valley of Than Uyen, home to Thai, Lao, Lu, Dao, and H’mong ethnic communities.
Depending on the weather and riding conditions, you may choose between a mountain trail route or the main road to reach Mu Cang Chai, the famous heritage land of terraced rice fields. Along the way, we take time to stop at many spectacular viewpoints overlooking the magnificent rice terraces cultivated by the H’mong people.
Overnight in a hotel with private room.
After a relaxed breakfast, we spend the morning riding through some of the most famous viewpoints of Mu Cang Chai, including Horseshoe Hill, Mam Xoi Hill, and La Pan Tan village. We then continue along the legendary Khau Pha Pass, one of the most scenic mountain passes in Vietnam and a paradise for photographers.
On the way, we visit our friends’ family in Cao Pha Valley, surrounded by breathtaking terraced rice fields and home to H’mong and Thai ethnic communities.
After lunch in Nghia Lo, continue the long but enjoyable ride back to Hanoi along the Red River valley.
Arrival in Hanoi around 5:30 PM. End of the tour.
